As International Nurses Day approaches, we pause to honour and celebrate the invaluable contributions of nurses worldwide. At City Fertility, we’re fortunate to have a team of dedicated nurses who play a pivotal role in fulfilling the dreams of hopeful parents-to-be.
In our fertility clinics, nurses serve as pillars of strength and compassion, guiding patients through the intricate journey of assisted reproduction with professionalism and empathy. Their expertise and unwavering dedication create a nurturing environment where patients feel supported and empowered to pursue their dreams of starting a family.
Today, we’re proud to spotlight two members of our nursing team, each contributing their unique skills and passion to our clinic’s success. Meet our Nurses
Jo Masters, Sydney CBD Nurse Manager
Jo, could you please tell us a bit about yourself and your journey in nursing?
“I wanted to be a nurse from a very young age, well before I left school; I think I was just fascinated about all aspects of hospitals and helping to look after unwell people. It really felt like a career where you could make a difference. After years working in Cardiothoracic HDU, I was drawn to specializing in women’s health, attracted to it as a woman myself and that’s when I saw an advert for an IVF nursing role and applied!”
Juliette Dea, Sydney CBD Director of Nursing
Juliette, could you share a bit about your background and what led you to specialise in theatre nursing?
“It has been a long path of many years in intensive care and then the emergency department to where I find I am today! After shift work, working weekends and nights, I finally felt I had made it in as an anaesthetic nurse and now the Director of Nursing! This job allows a certain level of high acuity, which I like, but much better hours for a work-life balance.”
The Rewards of Nursing in Fertility Care
What are the most rewarding aspects of being an IVF nurse?
Jo Masters: “Being an IVF nurse is a unique nursing role as it’s a lot less clinical than other nursing roles are. The focus really is on emotional support & education of patients/couples at a very challenging time in their lives. To help create a family is a real privilege.”
And for you, Juliette, what do you find most rewarding about your role in theatre nursing?
Juliette Dea: “For me, the most rewarding part of this job is being able to work with such passionate people. When Patients become pregnant, it’s like it has happened to a family member. We can build up such good relationships with our patients and take the time to listen and help with their needs. In the public system, I often felt we never had time to do this!”
A Message to Aspiring Nurses
As we celebrate International Nurses Day, what message would you like to share with aspiring nurses or those considering a career in IVF or theatre nursing?
Jo Masters: “To aspiring nurses, if you like women’s health and find the reproductive system fascinating give it a go. The role involves a lot of counselling and emotional support at a time in people’s lives when stress is high. It feels amazing to help patients/couples realise their dream of having a family. The hours we do a better than hospital work also, allowing for a great work/life balance.”
Juliette Dea: “When you are ready try theatre nursing, it is very rewarding. You still get patient contact and can make a big difference to patients at one of their most vulnerable times. It is a good combination of patient care, working closely with the doctors and good hours. I would recommend it to any nurse who has worked in other areas for a couple of years previously.”
