Getting started

The first steps on your fertility journey

Please note: This video may not be copied or used, in whole or in part, without the prior written permission of City Fertility © 2016.

The first step towards accessing fertility treatment is to obtain a referral, from your GP, in order to see one of our accredited fertility experts.

Whether you have seen other specialists or this is your first time seeking fertility advice, you will receive an individualised, comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment.

From the outset of your fertility journey, we will strive to provide clear and comprehensive information so you can make well-informed decisions about your investigations and treatment, and feel that you are a part of and in control of your journey.

City Fertility’s medical, nursing and laboratory teams work closely together and draw from their wealth of experience to develop a treatment plan that will provide you with the best chance of achieving a healthy pregnancy.

When to seek help

The current definition of infertility is failure to conceive following one year of unprotected intercourse if under 35 years of age, or six months if over 35. However, initial infertility evaluations should be individualised, taking into consideration such factors as the medical history of the couple and the age of the female partner. Your specialist will discuss this with you thoroughly.

For women aged 40 and over, it would be recommended that further investigations be initiated after three months of trying to fall pregnant as female age is one of the most important predictors of whether pregnancy will be achieved.

Other indicators that early treatment should be sought include:

Female

  • Irregular menstrual cycles or absent periods.
  • A diagnosis of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
  • A diagnosis of endometriosis.
  • A history suggestive of tubal damage, recurrent miscarriage, genetic conditions or family history of premature menopause.

Male

  • Poor sperm morphology (abnormally shaped), poor motility (slow-moving), low sperm count.
  • Presence of antisperm antibodies.
  • Ejaculatory problems or azoospermia (no sperm present).
  • Alternative to male sterilisation reversal.

How do I make an initial appointment with a City Fertility specialist?

The first step towards accessing fertility treatment at City Fertility is to obtain a referral from your GP to one of our accredited specialists. You can download a City Fertility referral form and take it along to your GP appointment.

Another way of obtaining a GP referral is by using Doctors on Demand. This is a 24-hour service that gives you access to Australian Registered doctors via video conference appointments. You can discuss your personal circumstances and get a referral to one of our fertility specialists from the privacy and convenience of your own home. Simply schedule an appointment via their website at a time that suits you.
