Understanding how much fertility treatments cost, what services are included, Medicare rebates and how private insurance works can be very confusing. The most important thing to understand is that fertility costs vary depending on the assistance you require. Every person is different, and your fertility specialist will tailor a treatment plan for your needs while helping you make informed treatment decisions.

 

How much does IVF cost?

Transparency of fees is very important. The table below provides City Fertility up-front fertility treatment costs, as well as an estimate of the expected out-of-pocket costs (after the Medicare rebate).

Fees are correct as of 1st January 2025.

*Please note that slight variations in pricing may occur between City Fertility clinics. Every patient will receive a comprehensive IVF cost estimate before commencing treatment.

These fees do not include fertility specialist consultations, day hospital fees, freezing costs, storage and extra medications you may require. The fees assume that the person/couple has already reached the Medicare Safety Net threshold for that calendar year.

 

Discounted IVF Costs

We are confident that you will be able to achieve a pregnancy within two fully stimulated IVF cycles*, therefore, we offer a reduced up-front fee for repeated treatment cycles. This means that a discount will be applicable from the third IVF cycle onwards with City Fertility, regardless of when you had your previous cycles. Please note this offer is not available for our Perth, WA sites.

*Success rates will vary depending on your individual circumstances including factors such as age, quality of embryos, number of previous cycles and whether you have been pregnant before.

What is included in City Fertility fees?Click to show

The cost of fertility and IVF treatment covers a range of inclusions such as:

  • Comprehensive education on the treatment process.
  • Blood tests (pathology) during your IVF cycle.
  • Ultrasounds with your specialist during your IVF cycle.
  • Laboratory scientific services including extended culture.
  • Semen preparation for IVF.
  • Support from a specialised team of fertility coordinators and scientists.
  • Supportive counselling with a City Fertility affiliated counsellor during your IVF cycle

Please note: Cycle fees are not inclusive of specialist fees for planning and managing your cycle, performing the EPU and attending the transfer. Please contact the office of your fertility specialist for an individual quote and further information regarding their consultation, cycle fees and the relevant rebates.

The fees listed are based on a standard IVF cycle, if your treatment involves donor gametes, please contact the clinic for a tailored quote suitable to your treatment plan.

The upfront fee payable varies depending on the City Fertility location that you are attending for treatment. Please contact your local patient services team for an individual quote relevant to your treatment plan.

How much does day surgery cost?Click to show

Where possible all egg pick-up, transfers and IUI procedures occur at our conveniently located onsite City Health Day Hospitals / Procedure Centres. Day surgery theatre and accommodation costs within a City Health Day Hospital / Procedure Centre may be partially covered by your private health insurance. For all egg pick up procedures you will be required to pay your excess (if applicable) and the gap between your private health rebate and the total fee.

If you are covered by private health:

Hospital bed fees and anaesthetic fees associated with the egg collection are not included in City Fertility fees. If you have private health insurance with hospital cover for Assisted Reproductive Technology, you may be partially covered for these costs. We recommend that you contact your Private Health fund and quote Medicare item number 13212 to confirm your level of cover.

If you are not covered by private health:

If you do not have private health insurance or are not covered, the cost of your procedure will vary depending on the private hospital or day procedure centre you attend. Please contact our patient services team to provide you with an estimate of these fees.

All hospital fees are payable upon admission to the hospital. Please note that there will be an additional charge for the anaesthetist in attendance of approximately $500-$800, that is billed directly to the patient of which a Medicare rebate will apply and may be eligible for private health fund rebate.

What is the estimated cost of IVF medication?Click to show

The Federal Government requires patients to pay a PBS co-payment for each type of fertility medication listed on the prescription from your fertility specialist. The average price per cycle is estimated to be approximately $160. However, this fee may vary depending on your treatment plan.
The PBS co-payment is not applicable to a Medicare-ineligible cycle. Medicare-ineligible patients will pay for their medication privately according to the price schedule of the pharmacy that dispenses the medication to them.

We use Ezypay, a direct debit platform, to manage storage payments. For those who prefer not to use direct debit, we offer an alternative to pay upfront yearly, though this option has a slightly higher fee due to additional management. Existing patients wishing to change their payment method can contact our Patient Services team. Storage fees are reviewed annually and may change.

What is the Medicare Safety Net? Click to show

With Medicare’s assistance, fertility treatment is now more affordable and accessible. To receive the Medicare rebate, you must have a current GP referral. If you have private health cover, it may help with additional costs, such as hospital and specialist fees, but it does not cover fertility treatment directly.

In addition to receiving the standard Medicare rebate for fertility treatment, you may also be eligible for the Medicare Safety Net rebate. In the calendar year 2025, the Medicare Safety Net Threshold is $2615.50. Once you reach this, you may receive higher rebates and further cost savings. How much does it cost to access donor sperm and eggs? Click to show
