Starting Your Fertility Journey

Seeking Fertility Advice and Don’t Know Where to Start?

If you’re a couple finding it more difficult to fall pregnant than you imagined, you can rest assured your dream of parenthood is in good hands with City Fertility Centre.

Many couples experience a delay in achieving conception, and we have played a part in thousands of beautiful babies coming into the world.

By making that initial enquiry with us, you’re empowering yourself with expert advice aimed at giving you the best chance of achieving conception.

Our friendly staff in our Fertility Advice Centre will advise you to get the ball rolling by obtaining a referral from your GP to see one of our accredited fertility experts. We offer a guaranteed appointment within 10 working days with the first available specialist.

We can then discuss your situation, work out what tests are required, examine the results and formulate a treatment plan based on your specific circumstances. We’ll give you all the guidance and support you need every step of the way, with the added benefit of seeing the same specialist from start to finish.

It’s also important to note that, like one-third of couples who seek our assistance, you may not need IVF to fall pregnant. Sometimes a simpler option, such as Ovulation Induction (AI), is recommended. AI involves medications that cause or regulate ovulation, or increase the number of eggs produced during a cycle, to increase the likelihood of conception.

Whatever the path chosen for you, City Fertility Centre’s medical, nursing and laboratory teams work closely together and draw from their wealth of experience to help overcome your (or your partner’s) barrier to achieving a healthy pregnancy.

When Should I Seek Help

One of the first hurdles people face when pregnancy is proving elusive is to actually realise that there is a problem and expert advice is needed.

People’s situations differ but, as a guide, the definition of infertility is failure to conceive following one year of unprotected intercourse if you are a woman aged under 35, or six unsuccessful months if over 35. However, initial infertility evaluations should be individualised, taking into consideration such factors as a couple’s medical history and the age of the female partner. Your specialist will discuss this with you thoroughly.

For women aged 40 and over, further investigations should be initiated after three months of trying to fall pregnant as female age is one of the most important predictors of whether pregnancy will be achieved.

Other signs that early treatment should be sought include:

Female

  • Irregular menstrual cycles or absent periods
  • A diagnosis of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • A diagnosis of endometriosis
  • A history suggestive of tubal damage, recurrent miscarriage, genetic conditions or a family history of premature menopause.

Male

  • Poor sperm morphology (abnormally shaped), poor motility (slow-moving), low sperm count
  • The presence of antisperm antibodies
  • Ejaculatory problems or azoospermia (no sperm present)
  • Alternative to male sterilisation reversal.
