Affordable NSW IVF Treatments: Rebates to assist your path to parenthood

Are you living in NSW and considering IVF treatment? The NSW government’s “Affordable IVF initiative” offers a $2000 rebate to reduce the cost of IVF and other assisted reproductive treatments for women in NSW. This initiative is a significant step towards helping NSW families experience the joy of parenthood.

What’s Included in the NSW Fertility Rebate?

Those who are eligible will benefit from:

  1. A $2000 rebate for IVF treatment in NSW.
  2. A $250 extended rebate for pre-IVF fertility testing.
  3. Five days of paid fertility treatment leave for teachers, nurses or other NSW public servants.

 

Important Update to the NSW Rebate 

Claiming the Current $2,000 Rebate

To qualify for the current rebate, you must: 

  • Complete your IVF cycle before 18th February 2025. 
  • Submit evidence of your out-of-pocket costs to Service NSW by 4th March 2025.

This applies to treatments received between 1st October 2022 and 18th February 2025. 

Note: Patients can only receive the Fertility Treatment Rebate payment once.


Changes to the Rebate (Effective 19th February 2025) 

From 19th February 2025, new eligibility requirements will apply: 

  • Treatment must commence on or after 19th February 2025. 
  • Patients must meet household income criteria, including: receiving Family Tax Benefit, or hold a Health Care Card, or have an annual household income of $116,000 or less.

All other eligibility criteria remain unchanged. 

  • If you do not meet these new criteria, you will no longer be eligible for the rebate. 

 

Who is Eligible for the NSW IVF Rebate?

To apply for the $2000 NSW fertility rebate, you must:

  • be a woman (or meet Service NSW guidelines for transgender and non-binary individuals receiving fertility treatment)
  • be a resident of NSW
  • have received fertility treatment from an accredited ART provider
  • have incurred eligible out-of-pocket costs not reimbursed by another government program or rebate, such as Medicare
  • have received treatment for purposes other than fertility preservation. 

 

How to Claim the NSW IVF Rebate

  1. Have your fertility specialist confirm your eligibility for the fertility rebate and/or the pre-IVF fertility testing rebate.
  2. If you are claiming the Pre-IVF Fertility Testing Rebate, complete the pre-IVF Fertility Testing Rebate Declaration Form
  3. Apply Online at Service NSW

Reminder: You can still apply for the Fertility Treatment Rebate if you have received the Pre-IVF Fertility Testing Rebate. Patients can claim the full $2,000 rebate with evidence of out-of-pocket costs that are less than $2,000.

Is the NSW IVF rebate available for all types of IVF treatments?

The NSW IVF rebate is available for a wide range of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) treatments, including IVF, ICSI, embryo cryopreservation, and more. However, it does not cover fertility preservation treatments or costs reimbursed by other government programs​ like Medicare.
